Whilst HMRC hasn't published New Year resolutions (at least that we know of) it's worth taking a look at its ‘single departmental plan’ which gives an overview of the department's priorities for the coming year.

HMRC’s ‘single departmental plan’ unsurprisingly focuses on key areas such as digitalisation, and tackling tax avoidance and evasion.

HMRC is committed to three key objectives:

  • maximising revenues and crack-down on avoidance and evasion;
  • transforming tax and payments,
  • designing and delivering a professional, efficient and engaged organisation.

Listed below are some of the steps HMRC plan to take to achieve these objectives.

Maximising revenues and cracking down on avoidance and evasion

  • Invest £800 million into additional work to tackle evasion and non-compliance in the tax system
  • Raise an additional £5 billion a year by 2019 to 2020 by tackling tax avoidance and aggressive tax planning, evasion and non-compliance
  • Increase their efforts to identify those who seek to operate in the hidden economy
  • Increase alcohol and tobacco smuggling measures
  • Strengthen sanctions and deterrents against tax avoidance
  • Continue to tackle tax avoidance, closing schemes and collecting revenues in excess of £1.3 billion in 2017-18 by way of Accelerated Payments
  • Increase the number of criminal investigations undertaken into serious and complex tax crime.
  • Support the government in its objectives to make it a crime when companies fail to put in place measures to stop tax evasion in their organisation.

Transforming tax and payments

  • Invest £1.3 billion to transform HMRC into one of the most digitally advanced administrations in the world, finishing the delivery of our multi-channel digital services so we become a ‘digital-by-default’ organisation
  • Encourage customers to use digital services
  • Continue develop digital tax accounts, enabling customers and their authorised agents to access all their tax affairs in one place.

Delivering a professional, efficient and engaged organisation.

  • we are professional
  • we act with integrity
  • we show respect
  • we are innovative
